Our event has gone from strength to strength since its inception in 2012 and we can’t wait to celebrate our fifth anniversary this year. What initially started out as us inviting friends along to play rugby on the beach, camp and socialise has fast grown into an international event with teams contacting us from across Europe, eager to get a piece of the action on the beautiful Firth of Clyde. Men’s and women’s teams from all over the UK will once again be getting sand between their toes, sea breeze in their hair and sun on their faces as around 20 teams challenge for the titles. Interest has grown so much from our first year which saw 12 teams compete for the crown and we’re counting down the days until we once again host these beach rugby enthusiasts on the first weekend of July!
In 2015 we had almost 1000 visitors to the site, of which nearly 200 camped over the duration of the weekend. The rest were day trip spectators that due to our greater emphasis on marketing both locally and nationally helped make the event enjoyable for all. We hope that this figure will continue to grow again over the coming years. The site at Turnberry can hold nearly five times this and we are confident that last year’s emphasis on live music and the introduction of come-and-try beach volleyball helped widen the appeal of the event and will continue to bring in a more diverse audience. We’re throwing in a bit of morning yoga on the beach this year too, so there should be something for everyone.
In addition, TBR has hosted a Beach Rugby Legacy Games for U16 teams over the past couple of years. The legacy event has been a huge success and all participants thoroughly enjoyed curtain-raising for the senior event. We intend to continue the U16 Event and with the support of South Ayrshire Council we certainly intend on improving our product year on year.
Beach rugby is an abbreviated, fast paced, hard-hitting and some would say extreme version of the 15- and 7-man game. With rugby traditionally played on grass in some of the world’s most famous stadiums, Turnberry Beach Rugby (TBR) combines the best of both and brings the game to one of Scotland’s most picturesque coastlines.
Beach rugby is 5-a-side on a pitch around the size of a tennis court, with continuous rolling subs (essential due to the continued fatigue of competing on soft sand) and very few stoppages, due to there being no real set pieces (scrums or line-outs) and a time limit on the tackle area. These changes therefore encouraging faster play, more tackles and flair from players not normally seen in traditional codes of the game! The pitch-side DJ creates a fantastic atmosphere and with further entertainment for all surrounding the pitches it is a lot more than just a rugby event.
We see Turnberry being the flag-ship for a beach rugby circuit, with the famous golfing mecca transforming into a vibrant and bright festival of music and sport, where the cream of the teams from across the qualifying events compete to be crowned overall series winner, with a mass of spectators and music fans camping for the weekend, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the entertainment! This is our future vision and one which we are determined to see become a reality over the coming years.
